Eight Friends of Hangu’s biennial meeting rule
Demi-Gods and Semi-DevilsThe Eight Friends of Hangu’s biennial meeting rule is a precaution adopted by Su Xinghe’s eight former disciples: they meet once every two years and otherwise live scattered across the world, so Ding Chunqiu cannot easily locate and kill them all at once. The rule turns their fellowship into a form of collective protection, but the circumstances of its unexpected breach also expose the danger it can only postpone.
Origin and purpose
After the eight disciples were expelled from their sect, they continued to remember Su Xinghe’s instruction and the period when he taught them at Hangu Pass. They called themselves the Eight Friends of Hangu in commemoration of that shared apprenticeship. The name preserved their bond even as they lived apart.
Their separation was deliberate. Because they feared Ding Chunqiu’s return to the Central Plains and the possibility that he might kill all eight in a single attack, they agreed to meet only every two years and to remain dispersed in the intervening time. The interval was not a sign that their ties had ended; it was the means by which they tried to keep those ties from becoming a vulnerability.
The rule disrupted
The regular interval had not yet run its course when danger brought the group together. Xue Muhua explained that the eight were supposed to meet again after two years, but his old servant mistook the people at the residence for enemies and set off a signal firework without consulting him. The signal had been made by Xue Muhua’s sixth brother and was distinctive: each of the eight had a unique firework signal, visible across several li.
The mistaken alarm therefore did what the rule was designed to prevent: it assembled the dispersed companions at a moment when Ding Chunqiu might also be able to confront them together. Xue Muhua saw both sides of the result. The gathering was fortunate because the Eight Friends could resist an enemy as a group, yet dangerous because Ding Chunqiu might now have the opportunity to destroy all eight in one stroke.
Protection and limits
The rule belongs to a wider struggle shaped by the disciples’ former allegiance and their fear of Ding Chunqiu. Their two-year interval and separation offered a practical defense, while the firework signal offered a way to reunite in an emergency. But the alarm was activated through error, not by a planned gathering, and it revealed the trade-off at the heart of the arrangement: assembling the friends strengthens their resistance while making their collective presence easier to target.
The episode presents the rule as a fragile safeguard rather than a resolution to the conflict. The disciples remain connected by their shared past and by a common danger, but neither distance nor a carefully chosen meeting interval can guarantee that Ding Chunqiu will fail to find them.
